Top 5 Tuesday: Movies We’re Most Excited for in 2012

'The Avengers,' 'The Hunger Games,' & 'The Great Gatsby' are among the exciting upcoming movies of 2012

It’s time for the first Top 5 Tuesday of the new year! What better way to ring in 2012 than by listing our top 5 movies we’re most excited for in 2012? The year is sure to be entertaining, and there are plenty of blockbuster franchises to look forward to–some just starting (The Hunger Games), and some coming to a close (The Dark Knight Rises). Here are our top 5 movies for 2012…

1.) THE HUNGER GAMES starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson (March 23rd) – How can I put this…? I am more excited for this movie than I’ve ever been excited for anything in my entire life. Except maybe the final Harry Potter book. Mentally, I’m already in line at the movie theater for the midnight premiere.

2.) THE AVENGERS starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson (May 4th) – If ever there was a way to make the Avengers movie more awesome, it would have been to hire Joss Whedon (the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for you non-Whedonites) to direct it. It’s a dream come true! And to top it off, the The Avengers is being released on Star Wars Day! (May 4th = May the Fourth be with you.) Can you say nerdgasm?

3.) THE DARK KNIGHT RISES starring Christian Bale, Tom Hardy (July 20th) – It seems impossible that anything could follow The Dark Knight, but if you’ve seen the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, then you know that the third film looks like an epic conclusion to Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Read blogger Christine’s review of the latest trailer here!

4.) THE GREAT GATSBY starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan (December 25th) – In anyone else’s hands, I would write this off as another unnecessary remake that could never live up to the original, but I love Baz Luhrmann, and I can’t wait to see how he brings his own unique vision to this literary and cinematic classic. Also, I think Leo will be almost as great a Gatsby as Robert Redford was. (Almost.)

5.) MAGIC MIKE starring Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer (June 29th) – Based on Channing Tatum’s own experiences as a male stripper, Magic Mike features Tatum, Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello (True Blood), Matt Bomer (White Collar), and Matthew McConaughey as exotic dancers. So to recap: Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello, stripping. (Observe the promo image here.) I can’t wait!

What about you? What movies are you most excited to see in 2012? The Amazing Spider-Man? Men in Black III? Or is it Step Up 4? (It’s okay, don’t be ashamed…well, maybe be a little ashamed.) Let us know! Hit the comments section, or tweet us @PopCultureNexus. And happy New Year!

  1. I’ve got theories as to why Leo will be the perfect Gatsby. Robert Redford was great, but Leo is just right for our generation.
