Happy Birthday Louise

Dear Louise,

Thank you for existing! You are an amazing friend and even more amazing human being. I don’t know what cosmic deal was made for us to reconnect in college after so many years apart but I’m grateful for it. Today is special because it is your birthday. It’s your day! LOUISE DAY!

In my opinion, there should be more Louise days throughout the year because you rock. Here are just some examples of how you make everything cool.

10 Fictional Places We Would Love to Visit

Who doesn’t love traveling to new places? Unfortunately, some places we would like to visit don’t exist. Here is a list of ten fictional places we wish we could visit this summer.

1) Endor

Why? Because the Ewoks are adorable and badasses. They helped defeat the Empire.

2) Hogwarts

Why? “Why not?” is the better question. Quidditch, Apparating, pet owls that are house-trained … Living in the wizarding world would be incredible, but Hogwarts has the added bonus of being the coolest boarding school ever. Hufflepuff pride!

3) Neptune, CA

Why? We would seek employment at Mars Investigations, but secretly, we would visit Neptune to make out with Logan (and Duncan).

4) The Red Universe

Why? Altlivia and Lincoln. Enough said. (Bonus: lots of blimps.)

5) Sunnydale

Why? We want to slay some vampires and drink tea with Giles. (Of course this would be before the town was swallowed up by a Hellmouth. Obviously.)

6) Jurassic Park (with Tom Hiddleston)

Why? Because we want to see Hiddleston communicate with the velociraptors.

7) The New York Institute

Why? Because being a Shadowhunter would be freaking awesome. But mainly because we’d want to meet Jace, Clary, Alec, Simon, Magnus, and every other butt-kicking character from the Mortal Instruments series. And afterwards, we’d stop off at the London Institute circa 1878 to swoon over Will Herondale.

8) Stars Hollow

Why? It may be a small town, but it’s full of big characters. Sure, there are downsides to everyone being involved in everybody else’s lives, but really it’s like having a huge, hilarious family that all live within walking distance of each other. Plus, we would love to eat at Al’s Pancake World, no matter what kind of cuisine he was serving that week.

9) Storybrooke

Why? Where else can you have coffee with Snow White and Captain Hook? I bet if we stuck around long enough, the folks from Star Wars would eventually show up. Storybrooke is basically Disney World without roller coasters.

10) Pawnee, Indiana

Why? Sure, the city almost voted to allow Sweetums to take over their water supply, but what this place lacks in common sense, it makes up in friendship. Also, we will visit any city that had a Star Wars filibuster.

Happy Birthday Louise!

Today is Louise’s birthday and I would like to spend some time telling you how awesome the birthday girl is.

I’ve had the privilege (yes, I mean that!) of knowing Louise for a few years now. We became friends in elementary school but then attended two different middle schools and drifted apart. This was at a time when 11 year olds didn’t have iPhones and rarely used instant messaging (Do people IM anymore?). Yes, we had landline phones but the simple truth is we lost touch. Life happens. We meet new people and make new friends. A few years later, we saw each other again in college. It was a serendipitous moment. I can’t fully explain how grateful I am of that encounter. Becoming friends with Louise is like winning a golden ticket. She is one of the most loyal, honest, accepting, and supportive people you will ever meet. She is that extraordinary person who will be at your side cracking jokes and making life fun. I can’t think of a conversation I’ve had Louise that lacked laughter. She is Han Solo and Boots, always willing to go on an adventure with you. This is actually an accurate representation of our experience in college because navigating school was like piloting the Millennium Falcon in space with hundreds of TIE fighters trying to shoot you down, all the while solving riddles in Spanish. It was a special time. I don’t want to get too Hallmark moment in this post, but I thought it was worth spending time describing why Louise’s birthday is so awesome. She was born! And I am thankful that happened because if it didn’t, I would have to combine 5 Jimmy Fallons and 3 Tina Feys to create someone with Louise’s wit. That sounds like a lot of work!

Thanks Louise for being you and Happy Birthday!

Your friend in this universe and the Redverse,

Mary

First Time Viewer Reactions: Fringe 3×22 “The Day We Died”

Fringe Season 3 Cover

Deep breaths everyone! It’s the season finale.

This episode is just hard. Sure, Olivia is alive at the end, but watching her get shot and then her family gather for the funeral was difficult. It was especially difficult for me because the funeral pyre reminded me of Return of the Jedi (a beautiful scene in cinema). And let’s not forget Peter breaking down at the thought of never having children with Olivia. And Ella no longer believing in fairytale endings. So much heart break. Of course, the episode can’t end there. It’s the season finale for goodness’ sake. If you are not curled up in the fetal position bawling then the writers didn’t do their job, so the episode ended with Peter being erased. You know that ship that we’ve been fighting for…oh yeah, it’s gone. NOT COOL.

Photo Recap: Star Wars: A New Hope

SWNH 02

A film?! Pop Culture Nexus photo recapped a film?! Yes, we did.

To celebrate the site’s two-year anniversary, we decided to work together to recap one of the most iconic films in the country universe. Star Wars: A New Hope. Cue the 20th Century Fox Fanfare and iconic THX sound.

If you are a regular reader, thanks for supporting Pop Culture Nexus, and you know the history of photo recaps on the site so you can skip ahead to the opening scene. If you are new to the site and photo recaps, WELCOME! Here’s a brief history (we promise this is less boring than watching paint dry). In 2012, Louise, one of the creators of this site, was inspired by Price Peterson’s Vampire Diaries photo recaps on TV.com, and she decided to apply that fun form of storytelling to Fringe.  Her first episode was season 4, episode 8 “Back to Where You’ve Never Been,” and after a few posts, she was surprised to find that fans were actually reading them. Shortly after, Mary began creating photo captions for Fringe and Castle. The end. See, that wasn’t so bad. So, to celebrate two years of Pop Culture Nexus, we decided to travel to uncharted territory—a galaxy far, far away. We’re glad you could join us on this journey and we hope you have fun.

May the Force be with you,

–Mary & Louise

‘Star Wars Heroes’: A Book for the Baby Jedi in Your Life

Star Wars Heroes board book

My friend is having her first child, and as soon as I heard, I started buying books for the baby. Obviously I wanted to get him or her started on Star Wars as soon as possible, but it’s hard because, as I’m sure you’re aware, babies can’t read. (Unless you believe there’s some truth behind the 1999 film Baby Geniuses, which, by the way, has a whopping 2.3-star rating on IMDb.) Despite this fact, they still make books for babies—they just have fewer words and are made of cardboard so that when kids try to eat them, the pages remain more or less intact. In my search, I found one such book called Star Wars Heroes, published by Scholastic. It introduces all the major characters of the Star Wars universe (which, unfortunately, includes a picture of Hayden Christensen as Anakin), and has a short quote for each one. It’s a great way to plant the seed of Star Wars fandom in babies’ brains as soon as they leave the womb. Plus, it’s way more fun for parents to read a book about Star Wars to their infant than one about colors or shapes or any of that nonsense. With any luck, the kid’s first words will be in Wookiee.
